After being in remand for 30 months, Golden Dawn’s Giorgos Roupakias, who is on trial for the murder of anti-fascist activist and rapper Pavlos Fyssas in 2013, is being released. This development is likely to spark social outrage.
Roupakias had been in remand for the past 30 months since September 2013, the maximum amount of time. He will be held in house arrest, under 24-hour police surveillance and will only be allowed to travel to the courthouse in Korydallos prison for his trial.
Initially the neo-Nazi party sought to distance itself from Roupakias, however during the investigation that followed the murder it became clear that he was a prominent party member and invovled in many actions.
Aside from the self-confessed murderer of Pavlos Fyssas, all of the other defendants in the Golden Dawn trial to be released from remand, due to the major delays in the judicial proceedings. The trial is not expected to conclude before 2017.
