The Minister of Labor Yannis Vroutsis appeared at the annual HR Forum conference in Greece and estimated that the rate of unemployment is diminishing, while stressing that tackling unemployment is one of the government’s main goals.

Mr. Vroutsis made the claim based on ELSTAT divs which indicate that employment has dropped by to 26.7% from 27.7% last year, with official stats suggesting the trend will continue. The Labor Minister also praised the significant drop in uninsured labor (21.86% from 40.5% last year), which he attributed to the strict fines and regular inspections.

The Minister of Labor asserted that should the reforms in the job market had been implemented sooner the impact of the crisis would be much milder, which in turn would mean a more manageable situation, with less unemployment. Mr. Vroutsis highlighted the importance of current reforms, such as the upcoming 5% reduction of non-wage costs which will help create 30,000 new jobs.
