It was revealed in Parliament yesterday that the construction of the Olympic Games facilities, which have been passed on to privatization fund TAIPED, cost more than 577 million euros. The revelation came after SYRIZA MP Giorgos Pantzas requested the information from the Ministry of Infrastructure.

In many cases the final cost of construction exceeded the original estimates, such as in the Canoe-Kayak center at Schinias, which had a an original budget of 64.1 million euros and ultimately cost 67.9 million euros. The Sailing Center at Agios Kosmas, which was constructed in two phases, cost 116.2 million euros.

The Olympic Game facilities in Elliniko, which was also constructed in two phases, cost a total of 192.6 million euros; the baseball, softball and hockey facilities had an original budget of 88 million euros (without VAT) and ultimately cost 102.2 million euros (incl. VAT). Meanwhile, the basketball, handball and fencing facilities were budgeted at 63 million euros (without VAT), but ended up costing 90 million euros.

The Ministry of Infrastructure further noted that the final cost for the Canoe-Slalom center was 34.4 million euros (incl. VAT), when the original budget was 28 million euros (without VAT). The Ministry had previously revealed that the Olympic Center at Galatsi cost 60.4 million euros, while the Olympic Equestrian Center in Markopoulo cost about 106 million euros.
