The traffic police carried out about 450,000 inspections in the past few months and found 67,500 vehicles to be uninsured, raising the total estimate of uninsured vehicles to 730,000!

The General Secretariat of Public Revenue and Ministry of Transport will work with the union of insurance companies in Greece to carry out the necessary crosschecks before sending out special notices to the vehicle owners. So far, authorities have identified about 270,000 uninsured cars, 330,000 uninsured motorcycles and 120,000 uninsured trucks.

The owners of uninsured vehicles will be sent a notice urging them to insure their vehicle and pay a 250-euro fee within 8 days, otherwise they will face a 500-euro fine, as well as various administrative and criminal penalties.

The administrative and criminal penalties for uninsured vehicles are rather strict and include the temporary removal of license plates and driving permit for up to two or three years (in case of an accident), fines of up to 3,000 euros and imprisonment for up to one year.
