The coalition government is considering an overhaul of the wages paid in the public sector by the end of the year, under pressure from the troika. The Ministry of Administrative Reform and the State Treasure have been tasked with developing a plan by September.

The general direction is to reduce the wages of employees with minimum education to private sector levels and to divert the funds to those employed in healthcare and education.

In an effort to attract highly-skilled employees, the government wants to widen the wage gap amongst employees with minimum education, secondary education and higher education.

The entry-level wage is expected to drop from 780 euros to the private sector minimum wage of 580 euros (540 for those under 25 years old). The government is considering reintroducing annual bonuses for the more efficient employees.

Additionally, the wages in education, healthcare, justice and the military are expected to be overhauled, as the coalition government wants to bring balance these special categories of civil servants.
