Five of the suspects who were arrested last Thursday in relation to a heroin cartel are scheduled to testify before the prosecuting authorities in the courts of Piraeus.

Amongst the first group of suspect is the 40-year-old ship-owner Efthimios Giannousakis, his former wife and her mother, a housekeeper and a friend of Mr. Giannousakis.

An additional five suspects, all of whom are Turkish citizens, will testify on Wednesday. One of the Turkish suspects is believed to be the mastermind of the heroin cartel.

Giannousakis’15-year-old son, who was initially arrested, has been set free on bail. The teenager was arrested as he appears to have sent a text message to one of the suspects, who later surrendered himself and will testify on Friday.

The recovered heroin, which weighed 1.113 tons, has been estimated to have a street value of about 30 million euros.
