An Albanian man who was wanted in relation to the operation of a heroin cartel that was busted in Philothei on Thursday surrendered himself to the authorities on Sunday.

While the man’s role in the cartel has not yet been determined, it appears that he may have been in charge of a group of five other people. The suspect managed to evade arrest on Thursday after being informed via SMS text message.

Ship owner and business man Efthimis “Makis” Giannousakis appears to have been at the helm of the drug cartel in Greece. Giannousakis, who had previously operated bars and night clubs in Greece, established his G-Tanker Petroleum FZE firm in 2012, part of the G Tankers Group that operated in the Black Sea in 2005 and had expanded its operations in the UAE.

Prior to his arrest at this home in Philothei, from which about half a ton of heroin was recovered, Giannousakis had not had any run-ins with law.

Mr. Giannousakis also appears to have been involved with Vlassis Tsakas, who had controversially attempted to purchase Panathinaikos F.C. via a consortium of alleged Arab princes.

The arrested ship owner is believed to claim that the half ton of heroin that the Coast Guard officers recovered from his home had been stored there “without his knowledge”!
