The motto of the 2014 edition of the Athens Pride festival is “A Family Affair” and is scheduled to take place at 7pm on Saturday in Klafthmonos Square.

As the festival’s motto suggests, one of the main goals of the festival is to raise awareness about the possibility of creating a legally-recognized family. The organizers stress that Greece has been in violation of European Convention of Human Rights by excluding same-sex couples from forming civil unions.

The European Court of Human Rights ruled against Greece in November 2013 regarding the controversial issue, however the Greek state has not complied with the ruling. The event organizers argue that “exclusion from civil unions, marriage, childbearing and adoption due to sexual orientation or gender identity essentially means exclusion from civil protection and the security it provides”.
