With less that three weeks left to submit their tax returns, an estimated 4,000,000 taxpayers have yet to complete the relevant forms on the Finance Ministry’s online TAXISnet platform.

The delays are not however entirely attributed though to the Greek taxpayer’s procrastination, since the online system has experienced serious problems in handling the data and often does not operate correctly.

This has led some taxpayers and accountants to long for the days of queuing up in a tax office. «You might stand in line for hours» they argue «but you knew you would get things done in the end«.

Accountants have reported that at times the TAXISnet is not even accessible and that even the simplest tax filling can take up to an hour to complete, provided the system doesn’t crash.

So far about 2 million tax returns have been filled, with a further 4 million expected by the 30th of June, when the deadline expires. This means that the TAXISnet must handle about 210,000 tax returns per day, which is seemingly impossible. Accountants have requested a 20-day extension, arguing that it will not affect payment dates.
