The courts in Thessaloniki have issued a guilty verdict for the 14 prison guards over the torture and death of Albanian prisoner Ilie Kareli in Nigrita.

All of the prison guards were found guilty of felony crimes, except one who was found guilty of misdemeanor crimes. The prison director was found innocent of harboring a criminal due to doubts.

According to the court, the death of 42-year-old Kareli is not linked to the torture he suffered, therefore the charges were reduced. The court also found mitigating circumstances in some of the guards. The sentences will be announced later.
