The trial for the torture and death of convicted felon Ilie Kareli in the prison facility of Nigrita in March 2014 began on Monday morning in Thessaloniki.

A total of 13 prison guards are on trial facing charges of torture that resulted in the death of Kareli, while the prison director is also on trial for covering for them. All deny the charges and claim that they are innocent.

On the 25th of March in 2014 Kareli murdered a prison guard at Malandrino, where he was held on other charges. He was subsequently transferred to the prison Nigrita where he was brutalized by prison officers upon arrival as “pay back”. Many of the injuries sustained by the Albanian prisoner amount to torture.

There are 65 witnesses who will testify in the case, including prison guards at Nigrita and Malandrino, police officers and a cousin of the victim.
