One of Greece’s greatest hopes in the Rio 2016 Olympics judoka Ilias Iliadis met a shocking defeat in his first match at the Games. In the 90 kg category against China’s Cheng Xunzhao, Iliadis was defeated within 43 seconds with an Ippon.

Aside from many world and European championships, Iliadis had previously won the gold medal at the 2004 Games in Athens and the bronze in the 2012 Games in London.

Following his defeat, Iliadis told journalists that the 2016 Games in Rio will be the last in his career and announced his retirement from competitive judo.
