The leader of the main opposition party Kyriakos Mitsotakis is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Thursday in order to discuss the upcoming Constitutional review and reform of the electoral law.

At present it appears unlikely that New Democracy will support the electoral law reform, given Mr. Mitsotakis argued at the recent Economist conference that “so-called institutional interventions only aim to manage an imminent electoral defeat”.

Nevertheless, the New Democracy leader will support breaking up the biggest constituencies, however there are ‘fears’ that this may be an attempt to ‘manipulate the electorate’.

In order for the election law reforms to be implemented in the next general elections, whenever they are called, the coalition government needs the support of at least 200 MPs. New Democracy has 75 MPs and expects that the Communist Party’s 15 MPs will also oppose the reform. As such, the main opposition party will hope to convince 10 MPs from PASOK or the River to vote against the reform.
