The president of main opposition party Kyriakos Mitsotakis met with the ambassadors of the 28 EU members at New Democracy’s offices on Monday morning, where he argued that the closing of Greece’s northern borders is a wrong and counterproductive approach.

During the 1.5 hour meeting he overall political situation in Greece was discussed, with Mr. Mitsotakis claiming that he is not participating in the talks over possible elections.

According to ND spokesperson Giorgos Koumoutsakos, Mr. Mitsotakis responded to the controversial comments of Austrian Minister Sebastian Kurz on the subject, stressing that they are not in the right direction, nor are they helping a country doing all it can to tackle such a major issue. Mr. Mitsotakis explained that no European country can face the refugee crisis alone and as such, it must be address as a joint challenge.

The New Democracy leader explained that Turkey will have to become more cooperative, particularly in combating human trafficking and called for a clear distinction between refugees, economic and ‘illegal’ migrants.
