Internationally renowned theater actress Anna Synodinou has passed away at the age of 88, it was reported at noon on Thursday. In recent years Synodinou suffered from senile dementia.
The actress, who was born in Loutraki in 1927, studied at the National Theater’s School of Drama and became known for her star performances in ancient Greek tragedies, including Antigone, Electra, Andromache, Iphigenia and Helen. She also performed in a variety of Shakespearean and contemporary Greek plays.
Aside from acting, Synodinou also had a career in politics,having been elected MP with New Democracy in the elections of 1974, 1977, 1981,1985 and 1989. She was appointed Deputy Minister of Social Services (1977-1981) and was a municipal councilor in Athens.
Synodinou received the Maria Kotopouli theatrical award (twice), the Greek Order of Beneficence, the Danish Order of the Dannebrog, the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic and the Lebanese National Order of the Cedar, among others.
The President of the Hellenic Republic Prokopis Pavlopoulos contacted the family of Anna Synodinou to express his deepest condolences for their loss.
