The shameful and miserable scenes that are played out in Idomeni in the past few weeks area a blemish on our culture, as well as on the reliability and seriousness of the Greek state. Due to inability and disorganization, we let the chaos fester, thus turning us into the world’s laughing stock, while causing major problems to the residents in the surrounding areas and in vital services, such as transportation.
No organization or coordination with various NGOs is trying to substitute the role of the state. We let the local police, with its few resources, to manage the problem, when it was obvious that a much greater force was necessary, as well as coordination and responsibility from the people who can put an end to the chaos.
For weeks now the main railway line that connects us to Europe has been blocked, with a huge financial cost for businesses, while the efforts to turn our country into a transit hub to Europe are at risk of being wasted. We invested in the development of Piraeus, signed contracts with major companies, such as HP, which are now being wasted. As a result, one of the few successful managers of public organizations – Mr. Ziliaskopoulos from TRAINOSE – stepped down from his position.
So after letting this situation fester, now they are rushing to address the situation and are threatening to carry out a police operation to remove the refugees. This is a highly risky move that can have tragic consequences and even greater ridicule for us.
When will the government and its ministers realize that you cannot run the country with statements and promises? Society is in upheaval, the problems are increasing one after the other and some are still content with making grandiose statements. The chaos in Idomeni and the similar situation on Lesvos leave no room for complacency and apologies. They must wake up while there is still time, before we are faced with even worse situations.
