Nicolas Sarkozy is being held by the French authorities until he can be questioned over an attempt to influence the course of Justice.
Specifically, he is being accused that via his lawyer he attempted to sway a judge investigating his potential implication in the Betancourt case.
It is the first time that a former President of the French Republic is being held at a police station!
We do not know the details, but this seems rather profound even for France, where many political leaders have been dragged to court.
Over here, of course, that seems to be unthinkable.
The Greek political and judicial customs do not allow such experiences.
Nobody can imagine a former Greek Prime Minister being held at a police station for attempting to influence or intervene in the course of Justice.
On the contrary, most people consider political interventions in Justice to be the norm; much more so when the immunity of MPs is institutionalized.
Once cannot but bow down to the European Democracies that honor and defend the independence of Justice. This means that we also must honor it at some point.
Abolishing the immunity that political divs enjoy is a first step towards reinforcing the independence of Justice.
This first step in the right direction should have been taken yesterday…
