A 20-year-old man has been detained for the murder of his 25-year-old girlfriend in Thessaloniki and dumping her body in a river off the Athens-Thessaloniki national highway.

In his testimony, the 20-year-old denied the charge of intentional homicide, claiming that the death was an accident, following an argument between the couple. The 20-year-old also expressed his fear of reprisals from the victim’s friends and relatives against his family.

According to the 20-year-old Merchant Marine Academy student, the couple had been separated for two weeks, on the victim’s request. In an effort to rekindle the relationship, the two met at a relative’s house, but ended up arguing.

The 20-year-old claims he pushed the 25-year-old to the ground, causing her a serious head injury. The medical examiner’s report however suggests that the 25-year-old flight attendant died as a result of strangulation. The public prosecutor and investigative magistrate unanimously agreed upon detention.

Charges of perjury will also be brought against the 20-year-old’s parents, who initially reported to the Police that their son was hiding abroad, in order to avoid arrest.
