The Fire Brigade found a newborn baby girl – just 2-3 days old – in the lightwell of a four-story building in the northern Greek town of Katerini, after being called out by tenants.

The police and emergency ambulance services were called out immediately and the baby was transferred to local general hospital and later to the Ippokratio hospital in Thessaloniki.

The identity of the parents has yet to be determined. Police officers reported that only the residents on the first floor of the building have access to the lightwell.
