Athens is investing in an alliance with Berlin in response to the refugee crisis, in hopes of a more flexible approach to the upcoming second bailout review and debt relief talks.

According to a report in Ta Nea, the Greek government is fully aware of the Germany’s dominant role in Europe and is therefore planning for a long-term alliance. The Greek PM Alexis Tsipras will meet with Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel ahead of the upcoming EU summit, with the refugee crisis, second bailout program review and debt relief talks expected to dominate talks.

At the same time, the Greek PM is hosting a conference of Mediterranean EU member-states (Greece, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Malta and Cyprus), however political analysts estimate that this meeting will not oppose German interests.
