The country’s main problem continues to be the financial and political uncertainty. Governments come and go, bailout agreements are being signed, but stability is not restored. This is because no government dares to fully assume the cost of its choices.
For weeks now we have been witnessing the government’s fruitless effort to avoid the agreement it has signed; a pointless search for alternative measures, hopes for a political negotiation that are constantly shattered and a perpetual waste of time. As a result they either constantly contradicted themselves, as in the case with the VAT in private education, or they are expecting solutions, such as for the red loans and primary residence auctions, which constantly fail to meet creditor demands.
The perpetual wavering and obstructiveness though leads nowhere. It simply exacerbates and already unbearable situation in the real economy. From the moment this government accepted this particular deal – even as a necessary solution, in the face of catastrophe – it has a duty to accept and implement it. The choice of adopting some measures because we cannot do otherwise and constantly trying to avoid some others because they are totally against things we have promised only delays the negotiation, the payment of loan installments and in essence, it further freezes the economy.
After a wasted year though, the only realistic option is to finish up as soon as possible with the outstanding work, procrastination and obsessions that have brought us here. Because neither the people who are suffering, nor the economy that is on the brink, will catch a breath unless stability and trust in our country are restored. That is the real challenge of the government, not to seek out unfeasible, as it turns out, alternative measures…
