All of the opinion polls show that a very large section of voters are either undecided or will abstain from the elections. It is clear that the wave of demobilization and aversion to politics and the parties is a consequence of the deep crisis that Greece has faced for that past few years. It is also a clear indication of the people’s disappointment towards the parties that were called upon to manage the country’s problems and failed to convince society that they had a plan and the will to implement it.
The shattering of expectations, the disenchantment from the unrequited promises as well as the perpetual self-undermining of the political system from the charges of entanglement and serving interests leads to the proliferation of abstinence and indecision until it is time to vote.
Beyond the given responsibilities of politicians and parties, the country needs to be government with stability, consequence and coordination. Beyond the disagreement and disappointment of the people, they also have their responsibility, their limited role in the selection of those who will manage their fat. Being relieved of this right will not help them or the country.
The anger, leveling of everything and depreciation of politics will not only lead nowhere, but they also contribute towards undermining democracy. While there is still time, let the more mature thoughts, more rational approaches prevail among those who dismiss the electoral process. The Greek people have historically been one of the people that is always very passionate, some times too much, about politics and elections. Perhaps it is time, despite the problems, to replace this passion with more reason and democracy.
