The ongoing refugee tragedy has revealed the tragic shortcomings of the political leadership and state mechanism, especially in recent months when the country receives a huge wave of uprooted people on a daily basis. We needed a caretaker government in order to make the first serious attempt at organizing and managing the refugee influx.

Even the limited resources set aside by the European Union for Greece had not been disbursed… As revealed at Thursday’s interministerial meeting, no meaningful preparations had been made to begin collecting the few hundreds of million of euros, which would offer temporary relief to address the problem. Meanwhile, for the first time, the ground work will be carried out in order to document the impact of the refugee influx on the islands, in order to claim a support program from the EU.

Obviously the refugee problem cannot be solved with a few financial injections. Europe needs to take meaningful initiatives as a whole, to revise its policy up to now, while the individual countries must stop pretending they have no responsibility in managing this profound humanitarian crisis.

Greece, which as it seems will continue to receive a huge part of the endless wave of refugees, must also develop a structured domestic management policy, in order to be able to claim support from our European partners. What was not possible up to now, which resulted in the incredible situations on our islands, must be carried out by the new government. Without any obsessive thoughts or delays, a structured plan is necessary in order to at least restrict the dramatic consequences in areas that suffer as they unjustly receive a burden which they cannot bear.
