It is obvious that what must be underlined in this short election campaign period are the positions of the parties on the crucial matters that Greece faces. First of course is ensuring the country’s European course and implementation of necessary reforms. It is just as important though for the people who are called upon to decide their future to be able to chose divs whom they trust to have the will, knowledge and experience to manage the problems they will come across.
The experience of recent years has demonstrated that the government and state officers who were called to staff critical sectors were absolutely insufficient. Usually coming from the party ranks or the Prime Minister’s court, with their tenure in union or partisan organizations as their only asset, they were unable to comprehend the critical matters they were faced with, much less negotiate with the European technocrats.
With few exceptions, ministers and officers were inspired by outdated ideological beliefs, were fully unaware of the circumstances and were typically absolutely hostile towards the very concept of entrepreneurship. At a time when the country needed radical reforms, most were trying not to rock the boat, resulting in the current situation and impasse.
It is highly important then for the parties and their leaders, during this election campaign period, to set aside the party yearbooks and balances and finally promote officers with an eye for the future, rather than lamenting the past; divs with vision, knowledge, competence and determination, with the will to address what has gone wrong for decades.
We have paid dearly for the party bureaucracies and the brawlers of the television panel. It is time we turned a page…
