German Chancellor Angela Merkel blamed her predecessor Gerhard Schröder for the debt crisis plaguing Europe, by allowing Greece to enter the Eurozone.
Mrs. Merkel, who was addressing about a thousand supporters at an election rally, explained that “Chancellor Schröder allowed Greece to enter [the Eurozone] and weakened the Stability Pact. Both decisions were fundamentally wrong and the origin of the troubles we face today”.
The German Chancellor reiterated her vision of a strong, common currency, but warned that the goal can only be achieved by reforms in struggling countries, such as Greece.
Mrs. Merkel stressed that “the euro is something more than currency. That is why we have showed solidarity, but solidarity is always related to the responsibility for reforms”.
