The President of the Supreme Court Vasiliki Thanou has filed a lawsuit for libel and defamation against the professor of Constitutional Law Stavros Tsakyrakis, over comments he made on his personal website.

In her lawsuit, the Supreme Court President notes that Mr. Tsakyrakis referred to her as “naïve” and a “politico”, which she argues are demeaning. The professor responded by commenting that the Supreme Court president confuses the right to criticism of public persons with libel and defamation.

This development has caused major uproar, with the Democratic Alignment and The River condemning Mrs. Thanou’s decision to take action against Mr. Tsakyrakis. Similarly, the Coordinating Committee of Bar Associations, as well as a group of 14 professors of Constitutional Law have openly questioned Mrs. Thanou.
