The Bank of Greece is going to announce its proposal for the appointment of Governor for the next six years, with Yannis Stournaras being the likeliest candidate to replace the outgoing Governor Giorgos Provopoulos.
Mr. Stournaras has been tipped as the favorite to lead the Bank of Greece for the next six years after he was replaced by Professor Gikas Hardouvelis at the Ministry of Finances.
Aside from the position of Governor, the Bank will also appoint a new Deputy Governor, to replace Eleni Louri-Dendrinou. The Prime Minister’s consultant Yannis Mourmouras and the head of the Hellenic Financial Stability Fund Anastasia Sakellariou are the likeliest candidates.
SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras has expressed his disagreement regarding Mr. Stournaras and clarified that when SYRIZA comes to power it will not be bound by his appointment as Governor.
Should MR. Stournaras ultimately be Mr. Provopoulos’ replacement, the opposition party has vowed to attempt to have him removed, similarly to how the Anastasiadis government in Cyprus made the Governor of the Cypriot Central Bank Panikos Dimitriadis to resign from his post.
