The Ministry of Education has launched an inquiry regarding the allegations that a school teacher in Thessaloniki was cautioned by the school headmistress after a parent complained about the “Islamic propaganda” contained in the Manos Hatzidakis and Nikos Gatsos song “Kemal”, one of the most important pieces of contemporary music in Greece.

The teacher who was allegedly cautioned, has not made filed a complaint about the incident, however the Deputy Minister of Education Theodoros Papatheodorou ordered the investigation in order “to examine such anti-pedagogical and authoritarian attitudes which stem from cultural impoverishment”.

The music teacher claimed in her open letter that a parent complained at the head mistress about the ‘Islamic propaganda’ of Hatzidakis song ‘Kemal’ that was being taught in the fifth grade . In response the headmistress took all photocopies of the song that had been handed out to the students and called the music teacher for a private meeting. There, the headmistress allegedly express ‘disappointment’ and encouraged to music teacher to teach the children to live their country and strengthen their national pride.
