The agreement reached at the marathon Summit on Sunday may have left a bitter aftertaste due to the way our country was treated, by at least a section of our European partners, but at the same time it kept our country in the Eurozone and put an end to the uncertainty that has plagued us. This painful compromise allowed us to avoid a ‘Grexit’, which was openly on the table for the first time.
The tragic mistakes in the past few months, with the catastrophic contribution of Mr. Varoufakis, dramatically exacerbated the economy and country’s credibility, which made it tragically more difficult to reach the necessary agreement. The price is truly huge and the political cost – as it turns out, based on the stance of a significant number of SYRIZA MPs – is great.
Any other choice at this moment would be much more painful, much more dramatic, especially for the section of society that has suffered the most from the crisis. The Prime Minister took a major step in clashing with a major part of his party and policies. It is however a policy of responsibility which he must serve until the end, ignoring the political cost.
The delays and delusions of the past few months must be abandoned, once and for all. The huge cost that has burdened the economy and society does not allow any further delays and discrepancies. If the commitments we assumed are implemented quickly and the reforms pushed forward decisively, then the consequences will be restricted and normality will be restored in the country.
The country needs a fresh start and the people deserve to know the reality that they will face; without any sugarcoating, populist and petty political balances. Now that there is a huge political front in favor of remaining in the Eurozone it is time to finally address the mistakes, prejudices and ills that led us to this tragic condition.
A lot of sacrifices have been wasted because did not dare or because they insisted on repeating the same catastrophic choices that led us to here. The country is need of a radical reform so that it may finally look forward to the future with optimism. The next few days must demonstrate to everyone that while the Prime Minister has the primary responsibility, the political forces must also be aware of their responsibilities.
