The New York Times recently published an article on SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras, with the author arguing he “could play a vital role in shaping the European debate”.

The article notes how the opposition leader has managed to hone his profile, going for being branded a “left-wing ‘firebrand’ who posed a potentially lethal challenge to the euro, the European Union and event the global economy”, to softening his rhetoric and aiming “to create a ‘modern European state’ free of corruption”.

Elsewhere in the report, the author notes that Tsipras is “offering voters a populist vision in which they come first”, after years of crippling austerity and financial insecurity.

Mr. Tsipras’ social outlook and commitment to restoring wages and benefits is further highlighted, inciting German officials who have hinted towards the possibility of a Grexit. While European officials have recently dismissed such a a possibility, Mr. Tsipras argues that such talk is part of the negotiation process.
