The start of the New Year finds the country and the people facing up to a series of dilemmas. The hope that 2015 would find us more optimistic or at least less troubled about the future is dramatically restricted, for the umpteenth time in recent years.

The dim light at the end of the tunnel with the first positive developments in public finances in a long time faded away due to the climate of political uncertainty that developed in the past few weeks.

It is highly doubtful whether the upcoming elections will be able to solve the Gordian Knot of political instability that is shaking the country. The people are called upon to answer hard dilemmas amidst a harsh and polarizing climate which the political system itself was unable to answer. Governments come and go, parties fall apart, but the bare minimum national consensus that could rid the country of the climate of uncertainty is nowhere in sight.

The expectations which traditionally accompany the advent of each new year are limited, if not reduced to zero, from the tragic lack of a consensus which once again traps politics, the economy and society in a vicious cycle of conflict with painful consequences on everyone.

It is absurd for a country hiding so much creative potential within it, to constantly be trapped because its leadership is unable to understand the messages of our times because it constantly focuses on its partisan interests. It is incomprehensible that after so many years of the crisis and the people exhausted to be unable to find that common footing that will finally allow us out of this tunnel with safety.

In any case the responsibility lies in the people’s hands. They will decide where they will invest their hopes and expectations for the future. They have the experience and wisdom to realize what seems impossible today.
