The President of Parliament Evangelos Meimarakis has proposed a change of the constitutional review process, so that a great parliamentary majority may amend non-essential provisions.

Mr. Meimarakis made the proposal at the opening of an exhibition on the seven-year junta and argued that “we must revise some of the opinions we had” and “face things according to today’s circumstances”.

According to Mr. Meimarakis’ proposal non-essential constitutional provisions, such as ministerial liability, would be able to be amended by an assembly in parliament, irrespective of whether it is a Revisionary Assembly. This would occur with an increase majority of 3/5 or 4/5’s of MPs.

Mr. Meimarakis noted that he had made such a proposal in the past, which he argued would make the constitutional establishment more agile, rather than “having to wait five or ten years”.
