The possibility of a rudimentary agreement on national issues that emerged after the government and opposition issued statements is undoubtedly a positive development. While Turkey is escalating its provocations with by cruising in the Aegean and the Cypriot EEZ, it would be absurd for the Greek political leadership to not distinguish what is in the national interest. The varying opinions on the domestic political situation and the management of the crisis cannot constantly be used as an alibi to avoid developing a bare mutual strategy on the critical fronts of foreign policy.
More so when the situation around us is becoming increasingly more complicated, with the geopolitical balanced constantly changing. The statement of SYRIZA’s spokesman that “we are open to a discussion on the national issues” and the immediate response of the government vice president that he is willing to inform the political leaders in detail at any point, is a first step in establishing a channel of communication and consensus, at least in this field.
It is high time they all realized that we do not have the luxury as a country and society to waste ourselves in fruitless domestic conflicts that lead nowhere and bring about a divisive climate. The mutual goal of all political forces, to defend the national interests, is only served effectively and decisively through a common strategy and coordination on basic goals. It is unacceptable that up to now strict opportunistic reasons have prevented them from sitting down on the same table and exchanging opinions. They must not allow this opportunity, which they themselves created with their statements from yesterday, to go to waste…
