Fuel smuggling has consistently been – and apparently continues to be – a scourge. The governments and ministers who came and went realized this, but the smuggling rings carried on regardless, with few and far between exceptions.

The tax equation of diesel with heating oil was meant to be a litmus test. The price of both was equated, the Greek people are being overtaxed and now we are told that the problem persists and that the problem is now with marine diesel. This is a timeless dark tale that does not just affect some small companies, but the dominant forces in the sector as well. This could not happen without the services and support of officers and other agents.

When the people have to pay an arm and leg for heating oil, resulting in a huge portion of society forgetting about heating, it is obvious that these networks profiteering at our expense must be stopped, once and for all. The motive is strong, but in our times, the mechanisms and technology to effectively curb smuggling exist. All it needs is the political will and above all, the correct and efficient organization to stop the crafty ones from profiteering and evading taxes.

Many have become rich over the years, we have paid enough for the indifference and inefficiency of inspection mechanism, the public coffers have suffered enough and we must put an end to this. Uncovering the first network was a start and we must carry on, regardless of who is involved in similar cases.
