The life and times of Mr. Dimitris Kammenos were well-known, however the Prime Minister accepted the suggestion from the leader of the Independent Greeks and appointed him as a deputy minister. As a result the new government was under fire from everyone, from the minute it was formed. It was a misguided, foolish appointment of a person that has no place in a government of the left.
The subsequent attempt of Mr. Kammenos to justify the unjustifiable is irrational. His racist, homophobic and anti-democratic behavior is documented in time and is a major affront to the democratic beliefs of the majority of the people. Even if the illustrious comments do not represent him, as he claims, one only needs to look just before the referendum to realize that he has far-right or even fascist beliefs.
The cooperation of a party that wants to represent the Left with a far right, nationalist populist party, in the name of common conjectural political positions, cannot justify accepting such people in government positions. It is no coincidence that SYRIZA officers demand that Mr. Kammenos be removed.
We have paid enough for extremely divisive and national populist obsessions. If Mr. Tsipras wants to turn a page, as he claims, then such people can have no place in his government.
Even now, he ought to assume the cost of his mistaken choice and dismiss Mr. Kammenos and his ideas.
