The Minister of Finances Yanis Varoufakis commented on the outcome of Sunday’s critical referendum and noted the following.

On the 25th of January the people said ‘no’ to five years of hypocrisy. For five months we negotiated so that one sane argument could be heard: no to new cuts, yes to real reforms that tackle corruption. In these past months our partners planned to shut down the banks” he stated

He further explained that “they wanted to force a statement of repentance from us. As of tomorrow, with this brave ‘no’ we will extend the hand of cooperation to our partners. We will invite them to find common ground. We want the Commission to play a decisive role in healing the Greek crisis”.

Mr. Varoufakis concluded that “the heart of Europe beats in Greece tonight. As of tomorrow Europe will begin healing our wounds. The ‘no’ is a ‘yes’ to a democratic Europe. The ‘no’ today is a big ‘yes’ to democracy in Europe”.
