It is time the government ended the war of statements and impressions – primarily intended for domestic consumption – and finally moves on with the negotiations, so that the country and economy can be freed from the uncertainty. The collection of all available resources, from all public bodies, irrespective of the needs and obligations, is proof of utter despair, which even if implemented will simply afford a few extra days or weeks in the financial deadlock.

It has been three months since the government assumed power and it is in constant conflict with Europeans and Americans, the negotiations have barely progressed, the bridge agreement that they were after is going on indefinitely and the economy is in a state of complete asphyxiation. While the government is straining every available resource to pay wages and pensions, the employees in the private sectors are paid, if they are paid, many months late, as many businesses are barely managing to stay alive.

The universal reaction of all local government bodies to the compulsory transfer of their cash reserves, aside from brutally violating their Constitutionally guaranteed autonomy, is passing on the deadlock to local communities. The bleeding of available resources from the languished universities is equally problematic, after all the dramatic cuts they have suffered.

Aside from posing the risk of an unexpected accident, it is clear that these last moment emergency solutions have not prospect and cannot continue for much longer. The country’s survival cannot count on domestic borrowing, on an economy that is struggle to emerge from the deep recession it has suffered. It is absurd to deny certain recessionary measures, thus ultimately leading the economy to a greater recession , by putting a chokehold on liquidity and allowing a climate of generalized uncertainty to prevail.

Beyond any political balances and speculation, the country’s salvation is paramount. There is no more time for delays and sensationalism. The Eurogroup of the 24th of April has already been lost. It is time to take decisions that will balance the general interest of the country and the people and the absolute responsibility lies in the Prime Minister’s hands.
