The new settlement for outstanding debts towards the State and insurance funds was an inevitable yet necessary choice, in the current financial circumstances. It gives an opportunity to all those who were unable to meet their obligations to do so without unbearable surcharges, while allowing the public funds to collect part of the foregone revenue. Of course, along with those truly unable to pay, the settlement rewards all those who had the ability to pay, but systematically refused to do so.
Unfortunately, despite everything that has taken place in our country in recent years, tax avoidance and evasion of contributions remain our “national sports”. At the tolerance of at least part of our political system, which constantly announces that its first priority will be to combat tax evasion, but in the end we find found out that the only consistent taxpayers are the usual suspects, the employees who are unable to hide their income. Let us not forget that this perception was encouraged and fostered by many members of the current government, who were of the “I won’t pay movement” and today are calling up to pay our taxes.
As necessary as the settlement may be, at some point we must finally come to an end with the decisions that reward those who avoid contributing, to the extent that it is possible, to public revenue. So long as there is still time we must end with this complicated and inefficient taxation and collection system that makes it easy for those with a propensity for tax evasion.
There are solutions and we do not have to reinvent the wheel. All that is necessary is to follow the example for other countries that solved these problems ages ago, at least to a great extent. All that is necessary is to not exhaust the political will on promises and words, but rather turn into daily actions.
