The leader of the main opposition party SYRIZA Alexis Tsipras argued that his party is ready to govern and that he is not promising paradise, in the speech he delivered at the annual conference of the Hellenic-American Chamber of Commerce.

The opposition leader argued that the country is at “a turning point” and faced with a dilemma, to either “carry on down the same self-sustaining policy of catastrophe, or we can all seek out the alternative path of change and assertion”.

Mr. Tsipras stressed that his party will put an end to the “dead end of austerity and internal depreciation” by paving the way for “real, complete and national recovery, growth and employment”. The SYRIZA leader refuted allegations that his party was causing political uncertainty and market concerns. He claimed that the markets were responding to the non-sustainability of the public debt, the government’s inability to elect a new President and its “complete lack of a growth plan”.

The opposition leader stressed that a policy change was necessary in order for Greece to return to the markets, to end austerity, return to growth and see the public debt reduce. Mr. Tsipras spoke of the need for “a new social contract for economic growth”.

According to Mr. Tsipras, his party has “worked hard” to address its weaknesses and omissions and underlined that “we are ready to govern, we are not promising paradises”.
