The “Initiative of 58” has publicized the collective opinion of its members on Greece’s European perspective, in light of the upcoming elections for the European Parliament.

According to the “58” the Greek people took a “decision of patriotic realism and historical self-awareness” by opting to support the Euro, despite the crisis and for that the Greek people demands the respect, recognition, support and cooperation of its European partners. The “58” stress that they are against austerity and populism, while highlighting the nationalist and conservative trends being particularly dangerous for Greece’s European perspective.

Elsewhere the “58” argue that action is necessary to turn around the “bad politics” and that certain changes are necessary on the financial and social fields. Among others, the “58” are in favor of the ECB being given powers to intervene in the primary bond market and act as an emergency lender.

The Initiative proposes the establishment of a guaranteed minimum income and unemployment benefit for the poor. Additionally the Initiative calls for an abolition of the troika and its replacement by EU bodies, activating the European Investment Bank and Fund and more.
