The threat of unemployment, especially youth unemployment, is perhaps the worst nightmare for Greek families, the economy at large since it has huge repercussions on production, as well as insurance funds. The support measures announced yesterday might be the first in the right direction to bring temporary relief to thousands of families.

Of course, this is under the condition that the measure will be implemented effectively and the mistakes from the past will not be repeated. Unfortunately we have a bitter experience from wasting valuable resources either to “accommodate” buddies, or lost in a sea of red tape and bureaucracy.

As demonstrated in the study published by To Vima last Sunday, Greece has a valuable and well-trained workforce that is seeking ways to finally enter the job market and prove that it can take advantage of its innovative ideas. In accordance with the measures announced yesterday, it is a unique opportunity to invest some of those funds on creative young people, so that they can start realizing their plans. It has been proven time and again that investing in young people with creative ideas is a sure bet and can contribute in the increase of employment.

It also important to finally mobilize the auditing mechanisms, so that businesses that are to receive subsidies for new jobs can effectively take advantage of the funds and hire truly unemployed people, without having to fire other people simply to take exploit the subsidy system. Of course special care must taken for the long-term unemployed who face incredible challenges in their effort to return to work. Offering training can be a valuable starting point towards finding their self-confidence.

It goes without saying that the measures that were announced must be implemented and be consistent. The only consistent solution to reduce unemployment is by claiming as many European funds as possible, by taking advantage of NSRF funds to the greatest extent and by returning to growth. Because however much these measures may help, they are not enough to tackle the problems of the armies of unemployed.
