The police reported that it managed to arrest three men who had escaped from the Drenova prison in Albania, after a firefight took place after 7pm on Wednesday in an abandoned wood factor in the mountainous area around Kastoria.

During the gun battle one of the three armed men was wounded and arrested, while the other two managed to escape unscathed. The police recovered a Kalashnikov assault rifle from the injured man and quickly set up road blocks in the surrounding areas and used thermal cameras to locate and arrest the other two men.

The three men arrested – Gezim Toma, who was serving a long sentence for manslaughter, Eduart Lulo, who was also convicted of manslaughter and Reis Haxhiraj, who had been sentenced to 13 years for kidnap – were part of a group of seven men who escaped the Drenova prison on Sunday. The other four were arrested by Albanian police.
