The indifference of judicial officers, who are particularly sensitive in other cases, in response to the revelations and allegations of recent days is impressive. They do not read, do not follow what is going on with the tender for the television licenses and new owners? Have they not heard anything about what is revealed about the multifarious activities of Attica Bank or do they believe all this to be minor matters not addressing?

The prosecutor of the Supreme Court, who does not miss an opportunity to repeal to verdicts and launch disciplinary proceedings against colleagues, now does not seems to have the time to deal with what has come to light for aspiring new media moguls. Economic prosecutors also seem preoccupied with seizing accounts to deal with gratuitous loans and pastures…

The selective sensitivity raises many legitimate questions about how some officers understand judicial independence. Curiously, they are quick to intervene in publications that coincidently reflect government objectives, especially in the media, while at the same time are indifferent to the slew of complaints against people who happen to be in government’s good books…

The independence of the judiciary is constitutionally guaranteed, but tis must be demonstrated every day in practice by its officers, who ignore the pressures from those in power, rather than selectively give in for persona or partisan gains. Especially in a country such as Greece, where the citizens feel unprotected against authoritarian and partisan attitudes.

“The Institutions are not automatically powerful themselves, but rather they have the strength of the people behind them” stated the outgoing former prosecutor of the Supreme Court Efterpi Koutzamani. Her successors should bear this in mind…
