The US State Department has urges Greece and Turkey to demonstrate calm, in response to a recent escalation of tension near Inouses. The US spokesperson noted that Greece and Turkey must resolve their differences and cooperate in order to maintain stability in the broader region.

Turkey has recently escalated its aggressive tactics and provocations in the Aegean Sea, particularly in the area around the Inousses cluster of islands. On Friday a Turkish naval craft harassed a Greek fishing boat in the areas, while a CN-235 aircraft later flew above the island at a very low altitude (up to 200 feet). Analysts suggest these are Ankara’s attempt to include the area in “grey zones”.

The Turkish Armed Forces will launch the Efes 2016 military exercise on Wednesday in the eastern Aegean. The exercise is expected to conclude the 4th of June.
