Antonis Samaras and the New Democracy party believe the SYRIZA – ANEL government are taking the country to a fall out with the European Union speaking on the Greek government’s policy statements.
This remark that hinted even to a chance of bankruptcy, although the issue was not deemed of particular importance, even if it was replied to by Deputy Vice President Yannis Dragasakis who emphasized that the country will remain a Eurozone member, it is typical of the increased unease within the ND party, which believes the country might very stand before important decisions for its future and its currency they will have to be legalized by elections.
In essence, Samaras stressed that the situation in Greece is critical as the country is standing against all the other Eurozone members, and hinted that the worst is ahead if the Greek government chooses to clash with its partners.
The ND president basically moved along two lines. One is the support for the European course of Greece and the other his party’s preparedness for a tough opposition if things take a different path.
As was expected he gave an account of his governmental work for the 2012-2014 period and defended their actions against the troika, while degraded important part of the policy statements of the current government, stating inter alia that the target for a debt haircut is already abandoned while the government has adopted 70% of the reforms in the Memorandum.
In his parliamentary speech he said he is going to Brussels to defend the Greek position and is reportedly expected to describe the situation and ask for a loan agreement extension to Greece.
