The Kouloura junction on the National Highway is being closed off as peach farmers from Pella, Imathia, Florina and Larissa are congregated there in demonstration of not receiving EU subsidies.

According to president of the Farming Association of Veria Tasos Halkidis, the farmers demand that they receive the EU subsidies by Friday, otherwise they will adopt escalate their actions at election centers.

Aside from the adverse weather conditions last year, which saw hale and heavy rainfall destroy many crops, Greek farmers were deeply affected by the Russian embargo on Greek peaches. Thousands of tons of peaches wasted away in storage, while many farmers did not bother picking the fruit from the trees, in anticipation of the embargo.

Mr. Halkidis stressed that six months later and with the new cultivation season about to begin, he claimed that the farmers have not yet received a single euro from the EU subsidies.
