After many decades at the helm of Alpha Bank, Yannis Kostopoulos decided to step down from the position of chairman from the bank, with the former National Bank director Vasilis Rapanos replacing him.

The outgoing chairman Mr. Kostopoulos studied naval architecture at King’s College at the University of Durham in England and began working at the bank in 1963, before becoming CEO and General Manager in 1973. Between 1996 and 2005 he was CEO and president of the board of directors and since 2005 he acted as Alpha Bank’s executive chairman.

Mr. Kostopoulos’ successor Vasilis Rapanos studied finances at the School of Economics and Commercial Sciences (ASOEE) and obtained a doctorate degree from the Queen’s College in Canada. He has been president of OTE, president of the Finance Ministry’s Economic Advisor Council and president of the National Bank Group. Mr. Rapanos was initially appointed Finance Minister in the Samaras administration, but quickly resigned citing health reasons.
