The Ministry of Justice, in cooperation with the Ministry of Finances, is going to introduce a draft bill with legislative initiatives for seized bank accounts and embezzlement of public funds.
According to the draft proposal, funds from bank accounts that have been seized in relation to criminal investigations will now be used to support vulnerable social groups. SDOE’s recent investigations have resulted in the seizure of 9.5 million euros, 770,000 US dollars, 30,000 Turkish liras, as well as gold, shares, jewelry, real estate etc.
The draft proposal will also include provisions for reduced prison sentences and lenient treatment of people who return embezzled public funds prior to prosecution or conviction.
Justice Minister Charalambos Athanasiou stated that the draft bill will be submitted for discussion in Parliament in June and he expressed his hope that the technical difficulties will not cause further delays.
