The farmers are escalating their protest actions by closing off access to customs offices and motorways where they have set up road blocks with their tractors. Access will reportedly be cut off between noon and 2pm. The farmers are also being supported by truck, bus and taxi drivers.

Thousands of farmers have set up road blocks on the highways and motorways, in response to the government’s controversial pension system and taxation reform. The farmers claim that the troika-mandated changes will have a severe impact on the agricultural sector and their livelihood.

A demonstration has been planned outside the central offices of farmer pension fund OGA at 10am on Monday, while representatives from the road blocks arranged to meet in Thessaloniki at noon to discuss their further actions.

Additionally, they have planned a nation-wide demonstration to take place in Thessaloniki on Thursday, the 28th of January, when the Agrotica fair is scheduled to commence.
