The Union of Greek Ship-owners has expressed its opposition the European Commission over taxation and warned that the proposals may result in shipping firms moving outside of Europe.

According to the statement issued by the union, the existing Greek legislation on maritime transports does not distort competition, as the Commission claims.

The ship-owner union further explained that any fundamental changes may have profound effects on Greece and the rest of Europe, since it would undermine one of the most strategic sectors, which in spite of the major competition internationally, continues to be a leading force.
